How often should I apply shredder oil?
A good rule of thumb is to oil your shredder after every 30 minutes of shredding time. In practice, that usually works out to once a week for a busy office shredder or once a month for light home use. Micro-cut shredders need oiling more frequently than strip-cut or cross-cut models because the blades are working harder on smaller particles. Some machines have an auto-oil function built in, but topping up manually on a regular schedule is still recommended. When in doubt, check your shredder manual — most brands include a specific oiling interval in the maintenance section.
Can I use WD-40 or cooking oil instead of shredder oil?
No — and this is worth being firm about. WD-40 is a water-displacing spray, not a lubricant, and using it on shredder blades can damage the cutting mechanism, leave a sticky residue that attracts paper dust, and in some cases void your warranty. Cooking oil, motor oil, and general-purpose sprays have the same problem — they're not designed for the fine tolerances of shredder blades and will cause buildup over time. Always use oil that's specifically formulated for paper shredders. It's cheaper than a repair bill.

How long does a 100ml or 1L bottle last?
It depends on how often you shred and how much oil you apply per session, but here's a realistic guide. The 100ml bottle suits home or light office use — if you're oiling once or twice a month, expect it to last roughly 3 to 6 months. The 1L bottle is built for heavier use — in a busy office where oiling happens weekly, it typically stretches to around a year or more. If you're maintaining multiple shredders, the 1L works out significantly cheaper per use. These are estimates based on roughly 10–15ml per oiling session; actual usage will vary.
What's the difference between oil sheets and liquid oil?
Both lubricate the cutting blades and do the same job — the difference is in how you apply them. Liquid oil is poured directly into the paper slot or onto the blades, giving you full control over the amount. Oil sheets (like the Rexel pack) are pre-oiled sheets that you feed through the shredder like a normal sheet of paper — the machine distributes the oil across the blades as it shreds. Oil sheets are cleaner, faster, and harder to over-apply, which makes them a great fit for shared office environments or anyone who wants a no-fuss maintenance routine. Both formats are compatible with all shredder types — strip-cut, cross-cut, and micro-cut.
Do I need to switch off my shredder before oiling?
For liquid oil, the common method is to apply oil across the paper slot with the shredder switched off, then run it in reverse for a few seconds to distribute the oil across the blades. Some manufacturers recommend running it forward briefly as well — check your manual for the exact steps. For oil sheets, just feed the sheet through normally while the shredder is on — no disassembly or switching off required. Either way, never pour oil directly onto the motor or any electrical components.
Does shredder oil work on all shredder brands?
